Championing the well being of one of Brevard’s premier canal communities.

History of the Moorings and Surrounding Area

Here is a bit of history of the South Patrick Shores / Satellite Beach area and The Moorings.

The Moorings community in South Patrick Shores, Florida, was part of a canal system created from dredged land developed from the 1960s onward, turning barren land into a boating paradise with canals and homes. The canal system was created to facilitate the development of new waterfront properties and subdivisions. The availability of canal-front lots was a key feature of the region’s rapid growth during the space race era.

The canals of the Moorings connect to the Grand Canal, a dredged waterway that extends north from Lansing Island to South Patrick Shores for about 4 to 5 miles along the eastern shore of the Banana River lagoon. This process involved separating the barrier island from what was originally mangrove swamp land along the river.

The history of South Patrick Shores is primarily defined by its development as a residential community during the mid-20th century Space Race boom, and its historical proximity to military operations, specifically the former Naval Air Station Banana River, now Patrick Space Force Base. South Patrick Shores uses “Satellite Beach” as its mailing address, but it’s not part of the City of Satellite Beach. It is an unincorporated area in Brevard County, meaning residents share 32937 postal code but have different local governance, taxes, and services than the city itself.

Nearby Satellite Beach, Florida, was incorporated in 1957, its history deeply intertwined with the development of the U.S. space program at nearby Cape Canaveral. The city’s name, chosen in a contest won by Evelyn Price, reflects the “Space Age” spirit of the era. The influx of engineers, technicians, and their families created a vibrant, close-knit community that supported the missions launching from Cape Canaveral. In 1958, a 5-foot-wide metal “satellite” was even erected on A1A to promote the new town and its connection to the space program.

Incorporation of Satellite Beach was driven by the need for housing for the growing population of aerospace workers at Patrick Air Force Base (now Patrick Space Force Base) and Cape Canaveral, the area quickly developed. Over the years, Satellite Beach has actively tried to annex parts of South Patrick Shores, successfully absorbing areas like South Base Housing and Hightower. To date, the rest of South Patrick Shores including the Moorings subdivision who wish to remain unincorporated.
